What does petrol do to a diesel engine?

Petrol and diesel engines work differently. Petrol engines use an electrical spark to ignite the fuel, but diesel engines burn the fuel by creating high pressure. Diesel engines are partially lubricated by the oiliness of the fuel, but if it is contaminated with petrol that oil gets washed away. So although petrol won't burn in the diesel engine it can do damage.

If you have put some petrol in you diesel car, it needs to be removed. Get yourself and any occupants to a safe place while we come and carry out the removal and restart procedure. Once done, you should not suffer any further problem. Our mechanic will advise you in the rare case that any follow-up procedures should be carried out after you have completed your journey.

What does wrong fuel do?

Your car simply won't run on the wrong fuel. Diesel and petrol engines work differently: diesel does not ignite with a spark, like petrol - and petrol won't ignite without one. If you have petrol in a diesel engine - the most common problem - the petrol will wash away some of the oil the engine needs for lubrication. In either type of fuel contamination, the wrong fuel needs to be removed.

Water in fuel creates different problems but - since it sinks to the bottom your tank - it usually needs our specialist equipment to drain it fully.
