Straight answer: it's almost never the catastrophe people fear at the pump — provided the wrong fuel is drained before the engine is asked to run on it. What matters isn't panic; it's not turning the key, and getting it out quickly. Here's what's actually happening under the bonnet.
Petrol in a diesel
A diesel system isn't just fed by its fuel — it's lubricated by it. The high-pressure pump and injectors rely on diesel's oiliness to protect fine metal tolerances. Petrol is a solvent: it thins that lubrication away. Run the engine and petrol is pushed through the pump and injectors dry, which is where real damage — and real bills — begin. Modern common-rail diesels are the most sensitive of all.
So don't start it. Drained before it's run, the outcome is almost always simply a clean system and a car that drives away. Left in and driven, it's a gamble on the most expensive parts in the fuel system.
Diesel in a petrol
The mechanics run the other way. Diesel is too heavy and oily to burn in a spark-ignition petrol engine, so it doesn't so much damage the system as choke it — fouling spark plugs, clogging the injectors and coating the lines. The car typically coughs, floods the exhaust with white smoke, loses power and cuts out.
It's rarely terminal, but it won't run right until every trace is flushed out. Same rule applies: don't keep driving it — you're only spreading diesel deeper through the system.
Either way, the fix is the same and it's routine for us: drain the tank, flush the lines and filters, prime it with the correct fuel, and get you moving. Contaminated fuel, a bad batch or water in the tank behaves the same — and gets the same treatment.
A splash or a full tank — does the amount matter?
It's the first thing people ask, so here's the honest version: yes, the proportion changes the risk — but it does not change what you should do.
- A small splash in a large tank is diluted, and the danger is lower — but "lower" is not "none". Petrol still strips lubrication in a diesel even at a few percent, so it isn't something to simply top up and hope over.
- 10, 20 litres or a near-full fill is a serious proportion. At that level the wrong fuel dominates the tank, and running the engine on it is the version people regret. Don't start it — this one needs draining.
- Guessing the exact percentage isn't the point. You rarely know precisely how much went in, or how much was already in the tank. The safe move at any amount is identical: don't turn the key, and let us measure and assess it properly.

If you haven't driven off yet
- Don't turn the key. Not even to move off the pump — that's the single thing that turns a simple drain into a repair.
- Tell the forecourt staff; most will let you push the car clear of the pump to a safe spot.
- Put it in neutral, handbrake off, and push — don't start it to reposition.
- Call us. We come to the forecourt, drain it there, and you drive away on clean fuel.
If you've already driven on it
- The moment it's safe, pull over and switch off. Every mile spreads it further.
- Hazards on, get yourself and passengers somewhere safe off the carriageway.
- Don't try to "run it through" or dilute it by brimming with the right fuel — that isn't a fix.

"Can I just drive it home?"
Please don't. It's the most common question and the honest answer is that driving on the wrong fuel is exactly how a five-minute roadside drain becomes a fuel-system repair. A diesel may run for a few miles on petrol before the damage shows; a petrol car on diesel will usually protest almost immediately. In both cases the car being drivable is not the same as it being safe to drive. The sooner the wrong fuel is out, the better every outcome — cost, damage and time.

A fair question, and here's a straight answer rather than a runaround: a roadside wrong-fuel drain costs a small fraction of what a main dealer charges to strip and replace fuel-system parts they'll often tell you are ruined.
